Fixing Storm Damage at Wave Hill, Riverdale, New York March 2006
- Having a greenhouse on the banks of the Hudson River is beautiful, but it can also be costly.
- This 32' by 35' Lord & Burnham greenhouse erected in the 1950s for a private estate in Riverdale, New York towers 28 feet high over the Hudson. The estate and its greenhouse were later converted to a public site by the Wave Hill organization, a public garden and cultural center.
- A fierce storm blowing in off the Hudson River in March 2006 seized a roof vent sash that had been opened too far, destroying its hinges and a lot of greenhouse glass with it.
- Richard (shown here on the ladder) and his crew were called in to make repairs. While replacing the damaged hinges and glass, they discovered that the original local contractor had never installed the rack stops required by the vent sash design to prevent excessive opening of the sash. Had these stops been in place, the damage to the greenhouse from this storm would likely have been far less.
- As this project indicates, Glass Garden Builders offers not only a full line of parts and services for residential, institutional and commercial greenhouses, but the greenhouse know-how to save owners from unnecessary storm damage due to inadequate installation.
