Inspecting the South Bend Conservatories – September 2006
- In late September, Richard Diesl-founder of Glass Garden Builders of Old Lyme-CT was asked by the South Bend, Indiana Historic Preservation Commission to assess the condition of a unique 12-building conservatory donated to the City in the late 1950s, and in use as an extensive botanical garden.
- Relying on his four decades of experience in greenhouse design and construction, Richard determined that the cost to maintain the structures in good operating condition was on the order of $75,000--not the $3 million previously estimated by architects who are not experts in greenhouses.
- With Richard´s work in hand, the Preservation Commission and the conservatories are now preparing grant applications to secure the repair funds to keep the gardens operating for the citizens of South Bend to enjoy.
